The current facility was purpose built in 1988, providing a great space for gymnastics and similar activities. The large space is unique and not one that you'd find in a school, public venue or YMCA type centre. Large mats separate the gym into distinct training areas, established to cater for a particular activity.
A vault strip, foam pit, multiple trampolines and tumbling strips frame the gym around the outside. The mid-section includes several beams, two sets of uneven bars, parallel bars and other pieces of important equipment.
In April 2013, after much fundraising and securing grants, The Waitakere Gymnastics Club installed a brand new Gymnova floor, closely followed with a brand new set of Gymnova bars. These key pieces of apparatus are tantamount to the success of the programmes along with the coaching talent, providing a great space for kids and young adults to enjoy gymnastics.
Other key pieces of men's apparatus are also available - a high bar, parallel bars, pommel horse and rings.
Throughout 2016, the Club covered the large steel poles on the outer rim of the gym and the pit bar with high grade, quality padding to ensure the safety of gymnasts. Wall reinforcing and padding around the pit was also put up.
In January 2017, the Club was successful with local grants to replace all the foam in the large foam pit. Throughout 2017, the Club has replaced equipment, recovered mats and more.
Additional facilities in the Gym include a foyer/reception, toilet facilities and coaches room downstairs and a full kitchen and a mezzanine floor completes the upstairs level.
In the past, other groups have used the facilities for their unique activities such as a circus group, who practiced in the gym before touring with their act.
Waitakere Gymnastics is also very involved with promoting schools' programme, inviting many local schools to the gym during the winter months to give children exposure to the sport while learning key gymnastic principles.
If your organisation/group would like to use the gym for a training ground for a particular sport, the Club may be able to accommodate you. Please contact the office on 09 827 5394 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
